Last September I shared with you my journey of teaching, and the tenacity it takes to find a teaching job. As I’m sure you know, my goal was always to be an art teacher. Art is my number one passion in life and I would be completely lost without it. Art gives me purpose while also being challenging and fun! I love to share my passion for art through my Canvas & Cocktails classes, teaching Teen Arts at the LBIF Summer Camp, as well as teaching art in local area schools. However, the journey to finding an art job was slow, and after over three years of subbing, I decided it was time for a change.
An Unexpected Opportunity
My friends know my teaching job journey and always share any jobs they hear about. One of my friends told me about a few openings in a local district, including a technology teacher. In college, my major was in Visual Communications (graphic design), so I used technology daily. During my long-term subbing jobs, I also used technology in my lessons. Smart boards, Elmos, Google Classroom and Youtube videos are some of the tools I used to teach my lessons. I decided to go for it. It was a full-time position and I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Using Art to Teach Technology
For one of my interviews, I had to create a lesson plan for a 1st grade technology class. I knew I wanted to really show the interview team who I was as a teacher. The best way for me to do this was to incorporate a little art. In today’s business art world, almost everything is done on the computer. Business cards, magazine ads, commercials all require technology. I presented my creative way of teaching technology to students and the interview committee liked it so much they offered me the job! I am SO EXCITED for a full-time job, and to have my own classroom (finally!) I am also feeling a little overwhelmed as this will be a new chapter in my teaching career. I have never taught Technology, so I will be creating all new lessons and activities. My hope is that I can use my skills in art to make Technology a fun and creative class!
Thank you for being on this journey with me. I am forever grateful to all of my teaching coworkers who were always supportive and encouraging. Teachers out there- please share any technology apps or websites that you use and love in the comments below!
